Moody Wednesday

8 Jun

I have been in a bad mood all week. The thought crossed my mind that I could use a “happy pill.” I should just call up the doc and say, “I am grumpy and I want to be happy!” But in my experience, happy pills just tend to just make people dopey.

It was then that I had the sudden realization that the entire pharmaceutical industry is based upon The Seven Dwarfs: Sleepy (Ambien), Sneezy (Clarinex), Dopey (Ritalin), Bashful (isn’t that what Paxil is for?), Happy (Zoloft, etc.), Grumpy (see Happy), and Doc (where else are you going to get a prescription?)

And I wasn’t even taking drugs when I came up with that.

Of course erectile dysfunction is a big part of the pharmaceutical biz and there is no corresponding dwarf for that (Limpy?) but these little early morning fleeting insights only go so far.

Since I did not call my doctor and ask for that happy pill, it looks like my bad mood will not be going anywhere any time soon. Oh, it is a low grade bad mood. I am not going to bite anyone’s head off or start throwing office supplies. I’ll just pretty much just keep it to myself, go about my business, drink too much coffee and then binge eat vending machine food.

Something to look forward to.

Henry David Thoreau observed that, “most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” I don’t know about this “song” of which he speaks, but I get the first part.

A lot of people are dissatisfied with life. Maybe most people? In part, I blame the advertising folks (Madison Avenue, I am looking at you!) You can’t market crap to people without first convincing people that their lives are empty unless and until they buy that crap.

There is a lot of crap to be sold, so the messages keep coming–your life is empty…buy crap! Your life is empty…buy more crap! But the crap doesn’t do it, does it? So, we turn to pharmaceuticals, which brings me back to The Seven Dwarfs, which only goes to show, I am on some sort of mental Möbius Strip and should quit while I’m ahead.

You know, I make this stuff up as I go along.

I’m going to go now and take a spin on my bike, followed by some quality time at the gym. I am told that exercise is a wonderful mood elevator. Yes, well, we’ll just see about that. Mood elevator or not–I’ve got to do something about the extra pounds that comes from binge eating vending machine food. Then I’ll follow all of that by going to work.

So (can’t resist) Heigh-ho, heigh-ho…it’s off to work I go…

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

“Your life is empty – buy crap”. If you look in my closet, you will see that message has been received – many times over!

Your Seven Dwarves analogy is perfect, Bill. You really should give thought to doing standup comedy, I’m sure you’d knock ’em dead! ♥
