Today would be Friday and will continue to be until midnight. At least in the time zone I live in anyway.

For us regular Monday through Friday working folks, today is a big deal. Such a big deal, in fact, that this is the only day of the week for which we specifically thank God.

Then someone named a restaurant after the act of thanking God for Friday and TGI Fridays were born. Although, as far as I know, you can eat there any day of the week.

Ironically, since restaurants are busiest on Friday nights and the weekend, I bet people who work at TGI Fridays are not all that happy to see Friday roll around. They most likely work on Saturday too, you know. That takes a lot of oomph out of Friday for sure.

In 1978 someone made a movie called Thank God It’s Friday. It was a movie set in a disco that starred Donna Summer. In the movie, Donna sang the song “Last Dance”, which went on to win the Oscar for Best Song. As a result, some critics have labelled Thank God It’s Friday the worst movie to ever win an Oscar for anything.

I wonder if that’s why no one makes good disco movies anymore…

In Australia and the United Kingdom, Friday is sometimes referred to as POETS Day. That sounds very lyrical but actually POETS stands for Piss Off Early Tomorrow’s Saturday. I don’t know if anyone has named a restaurant after POETS DAY or not.

In a lot of companies, mine included, Friday is also a day for dressing more casually in the office. Thus the name, Casual Fridays.

I suppose there are some professions where Casual Days have little or no impact. What does a stripper care if it is Casual Friday? Those clothes are coming off anyway. Lifeguards are another profession where Casual Fridays really have no impact. “Look, I wore my blue Speedo.” Big whoop.

Some people get very excited about wearing jeans to work. Personally, I don’t find jeans any more comfortable than khakis or Dockers that I wear the rest of the week. I do like the fact that I can wear sneakers at work on Friday, so I guess Casual Fridays offer something for everyone.

Time for me to gather my sneakers and get on my way…

Happy Friday!

We need to bring back disco. That was a fun era. Donna Summers is awesome.

I think someone should open a restaurant called POETS Day. I bet somewhere there is one called Poet’s although it probably doesn’t have the same sort of meaning.
