Day Before the Rapture/Cher’s Birthday Celebration Blog

20 May

Today’s Save the Word word is Mulomedic  which means, pertaining to the medical care of mules. Really. When you think about it, what else would it mean? Mules need medical care too.

The mantra of the day is Openness. Which is, I imagine, the state of being open. That’s a rather brave way to face the day, open to whatever comes your way, open to others. It’s like on Star Trek when the shields are down. We have all developed our own shields that keep people at a distance. Today, this mantra reminds us to disengage shields. Take the day and the people who share it with you, come what may…

Today is Ride Your Bike to Work Day. It is also the 140th day of the year. (Where does the time go?) Today is the birthday of actor Timothy Olyphant (a personal favorite of mine) who you may remember from such films as The Broken Hearts Club, Go and Hitman, and such TV shows as Deadwood and Justified.

Today is also the birthday of Cher. Cher and I go way back–I remember her when she got second billing to Sonny. And the beat goes on…

Timothy turns 43 today and Cher turns 103. (I jest because I love…) Seriously, just in case you want to send her a card or bake a cake, Cher is now 65. Cher at retirement age. Like she’s ever going to retire!

Of course, depending on who you ask, tomorrow is Judgement Day. The people who believe it seriously believe it. Apparently they not only have the date down, they even have the time–6PM eastern. Synchronize your watches.

On Facebook, I was invited to a Post-Rapture Looting event. There are nearly 500,000 people attending at this point. I am not sure there’s enough lootable stereo equipment and big screen TV’s to go around. I hope this doesn’t devolve into something ugly. Harold Camping, the evangelist who got all this “Judgment Day is May 21” talk started in the first place, says those who survive the earthquake that’s coming at 6PM tomorrow will live in a world of “horror and chaos beyond description.”

My. I don’t like the sound of that.

I’m dealing with this potential Judgment Day thing the way I deal with most crisis situations—pretend it isn’t happening. Denial is not just a river in Egypt. Denial as a lifestyle choice–look into it. I highly recommend it. But if you tell anyone I told you that I will–you guessed it–deny it!

As if Cher’s birthday wasn’t enough of a reason to have a party tonight, now we have the world ending thing too. Looks like I picked the wrong month to give up drinking. Although, I am kind of glad I did. Who wants to face a massive earthquake that is going to open up the graves of the dead (per the Reverend Camping) and the post-earthquake apocalypse with a hangover?  Not me, I’ll tell you what.

If the Rapture comes tomorrow and the world is plunged into chaos, I bet it is going to be really hard to find a qualified mulomedic when you need one. (I bet you didn’t think I could work that into today’s blog, did you?) I just feel sorry for the mules.

Maybe this end of the world thing is all the more reason to live today in complete Openness. Gurus often tell us to live each day as our last. Of course, if I really believed today was my last, I wouldn’t be going to work. Via bicycle or otherwise. If this was my last day on earth, I’d totally call in sick.

In conclusion, Happy Birthday to Tim and Cher. Happy Ride Your Bike to Work Day to all my fellow bike commuters. Happy Day Before the Rapture to everyone.

Keep it real. Keep it open.

Wait a minute – 6:00 pm tomorrow? I wonder – will that postpone the Preakness?

Isn’t that Elijah Blue on guitar with his mom? I think I remember that from Pop Up Video (which I miss)… I would refuse the Rapture… would have to hold onto something sinful so I wouldn’t be yanked up to live with Jesus (which isn’t an appealing thought to me… I’d rather live with Cher).
