Of nephelaids and purposeful living

10 May

Today’s word from savethewords.com is nepheliad. Nepheliad is defined as a cloud nymph.

Today’s mantra is Purposeful. (www.elsajoy.com)

I have never heard the word before today, but I am pretty sure I’ve seen a nephelaid on more than one occasion. How about you?  They form clouds into all sorts of interesting shapes and play with our minds. Nephelaids are the curators of the cloud art which serves as nature’s Rorschach Test. Sometimes you look at clouds and you see a bunny. Sometimes you see a face. And it is staring right at you…

That’s the nephelaids at work.  Here you were thinking the life of a nymph, cloud or otherwise, was all fun and games. Not at all–they’ve got big responsibilities. Nephelaids, despite being nymphs, are very purposeful.

Purposeful seems like a good mantra. I know at any given moment during the course of any given day, I will reach for something or stand up and move in a certain direction and then stop and ask myself, “What was I doing? Where was I going?” Sometimes purpose is like the wind beneath my wings,  providing clear guidance and motivation. Other times, I’m like a nephelaid on a cloudless day–I got nothing.

To do things in a purposeful way, I suppose, is a lot like being mindful. Mindfulness is one of those things I strive for–or at least I tell myself I am striving for it when I stop to be mindful enough to remember I should be more mindful. Mindfulness is pretty much the only way to live in the here and now and living in the here and now is the only way to actually live. Otherwise, you’re lost in the past or future and life–meanwhile real life, which exists only in the now, is slipping on by.

I didn’t mean to get all Eckhart Tolle on you.

Sure, I sound all wise, but that’s just the coffee kicking in. I am as mired in the past and future as any other person. I’m about as enlightened as a refrigerator lightbulb–even when illuminated, there is often a leftover rump roast blocking my view.

Rather like clouds in that song by Joni Mitchell:

“I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now

From up and down and still somehow

It’s nephelaids I recall…”

Have a purposeful Tuesday.

Purposeful is good but right now I am longing for one single day with little to do but enjoy the work of the nepheliads. Looking at my schedule I fail to see a day such as that coming up anytime soon.
