Time, Time, Time

10 Jan

Monday, Monday…

I am not sure that this day is any less trustworthy than the other days of the week, despite what the song says. Still, it does sometimes feel like an almost violent interruption. Which is odd since we all know it’s coming.

Obviously the holidays have warped the time space continuum. By “holidays”, I mean that surreal swath of calendar from Thanksgiving until New Year’s. This year, with the big holidays falling on  the weekend, thereby causing an extended weekend, things really got mind blowing.

I frequently muse about time, ponder the implications and just plain complain about it. I’ve read theories that say all time is simultaneous. Whatever already happened and what is currently happening and what is going to happen–it is all happening at the same damn time. For those who believe in reincarnation, that means that your past lives and your future lives are occurring right about now, and now, and…

All of which means you can influence not only the future, but you can also influence the past. Of course if you influence the past, you can impact the present by doing so.

My ponderings about time are hopelessly linked to my feelings about regret. For the record, I am opposed to it–regret, I mean. Talk about a waste of time! Still, as one gets older, unless one has lead a charmed life, I think regret is bound to creep in. If all time is simultaneous, why can’t I influence some of those previous points in time that surface in my head for which I feel regret?

Most likely it is for the same reason that people in time travel stories are warned not to change anything. No telling what kind of mess you’ll make of things if you do. Not too long ago I revisited that old TV show, “Time Tunnel”. Anyone remember that? 2 guys trapped in a vortex that kept dumping them at various points in history? I was surprised that on that show, these guys never worried about changing time. They wind up on the Titanic, they keep trying to convince everyone there’s an iceberg. They wind up meeting Lincoln, they keep trying to keep him out of Ford’s Theatre. They always fail. Maybe that’s a tip of the hat to fate. Whatever will be, will be. Must be. Don’t mess with the primal forces of nature and what not.

Fortunately for the integrity of the space/time continuum, we don’t have the option to change things. That might be for the best. You might mess with some relationship from your distant past and that might trigger a hurricane and who knows where we’d be then?

Uh oh, time to go.

Work beckons…

And time waits for no man. Or woman.

Happy Monday.

    Happy Monday.
I don’t remember much about The Time Tunnel except to say I’ve heard of it.
We never had TV in our house until I was in HS, so it was much like Star Trek, something I had hear about but never yet seen.
As far as time is concerned … just stop the world and let me off, please. 😛

I’ve never seen The Time Tunnel either… and never watched Star Trek, but I was a HUGE fan of Quantum Leap (which is like sci-fi for folks that don’t like sci-fi). Dr. Beckett’s string theory did allow to change the future by some action in the past (and not in a parallel universe). Remember when he jumped into Oswald?

I would leave a really clever response, but I am pressed for time.
